How to Apply

Undergraduate Admissions

All Undergraduate admissions are handled at the university level. Please visit UB Undergraduate Admissions for information on applying as an undergraduate student.

For information about the Biomedical Engineering major, visit the UB Undergraduate Academic Programs website.

Combined Degree Admissions

Current UB Biomedical Engineering students may be eligible to apply to a Combined Degree Program. More information on Combined Degree Programs can be found on the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences website.

Graduate Admissions

Our graduate application process is entirely online. Interested students should submit their application and application materials using UB's Application Management System. Please do not send any physical documents to our office.

GRE scores are not required, but applicants are encouraged to submit GRE scores, if available.

Applications for admission are evaluated by the graduate committee on the basis of criteria reflecting academic quality and probable success in advanced study. These criteria are:

  1. Undergraduate and (where applicable) graduate grades
  2. Letters of recommendation
  3. A personal statement outlining past accomplishments, professional objectives, special interests, and educational plans

Superior grades and exam scores are important for admission. However, cases exist where students not having the highest grades were admitted partly on the basis of strong letters of recommendation clearly indicating superior ability and dedication in undergraduate research.

It is advantageous to request letters from individuals who have significant knowledge of your abilities-for instance, professors who have taught you in more than one course or with whom you have carried out an independent study project or research. You should give these individuals as much lead time as possible so that they will not be rushed and will be able to write detailed and thoughtful letters of recommendation.

Application Components

Using the Application Management System, every applicant must submit the following:

  • All required fields on the application
  • Letters of recommendation
    • One (1) letter of recommendation is required for MS applicants
    • Two (2) letters of recommendation are required for PhD applicants
  • Resume/Curricula Vitae
  • Personal Statement
  • Unofficial copies of academic transcripts from undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) studies (English translations required)
  • $85 Application Fee

GRE scores are not required, but applicants are encouraged to submit them if available (Institution Code 2925, Department Code 1603).

International Application Requirements

English language proficiency is required for international applicants. You do not need to provide official test scores in order for your application to be considered. Unofficial test scores are sufficient for the admissions committee to review. Applicants need to upload an unofficial copy of one (1) single test and also type their scores into the "Test Score" tab on the application.

  • TOEFL – minimum overall score of 79
  • IELTS – minimum overall score of 6.5
  • PTE – minimum overall score of 55
  • Duolingo– minimum overall score of 120

International applicants will also be required to submit copies of their passport, Visa and I-20 if one has already been obtained, and financial documentation. These documents do not need to be submitted prior to applying, but if the department offers admission they must be submitted before the applicant can be formally approved.
