During the senior year, Biomedical Engineering students are required to complete three upper-level technical electives, allowing you to gain advanced skills in areas of Biomedical Engineering that are directly related to your career or educational goals.
Our department offers a number of Technical Elective options. At least two of your three technical electives must be Biomedical Engineering (BE). Listed below are Biomedical Engineering offered courses, descriptions can be found in the undergraduate catalog. Not all courses are offered every year or every semester, and new courses are always being added. Be sure to utilize the class search in HUB to determine what courses are being offered.
Note: Undergraduate students who take BE 400-level courses cannot retake the same course as a Graduate student at the 500-level.
*BE 496, BE 498, and BE 499 can be taken multiple times, however their use for technical electives is limited. Only one informal course (496, 498, or 499) offered by the Biomedical Engineering Department or other department may count as a technical elective. Please see the Undergraduate Catalog for details and explanation. Registration into either BE 496, BE 498, or BE 499 requires the appropriate request form on our website to be submitted to the BME department.
Our department will also consider upper-level (300-400) courses from other Engineering or Science departments for use as a technical elective. To register in any of these courses you must meet the prerequisites and other requirements from the offering department. We are not able to force you in to any of these classes, nor does our allowing it to fulfill a requirement guaranteee that the offering department will allow you to take the course. Not all courses are offered every year or every semester, you should utilize the class search in HUB to determine if the course is being offered.
The following courses are automatically approved and are coded in to HUB to fulfill the requirement:
