Battaglia elected president of ASTFE

Francine Battaglia, professor and chair of the University at Buffalo Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, was elected president of the American Society of Thermal and Fluid Engineers (ASTFE).

Battaglia’s two-year term began June 1 and followed her previous term with the organization as vice president. ASTFE promotes the science and application of thermal and fluids engineering and related disciplines through professional development and the dissemination of information and knowledge. Battaglia was instrumental in the formation of ASTFE in 2014 and has remained active in the organization since its inception.

“I'm honored to serve ASTFE, which continues to play an important role in the exchange of new ideas and results in the field of thermal and fluids engineering, and fosters collaboration among researchers and engineers from around the globe,” says Battaglia. “I look forward to leading ASTFE and continuing efforts to support the growth and professional development of early career engineers and scientists. With rapid advancements in technologies and research, it is critical that we disseminate our knowledge and prepare the next generation workforce.”

A researcher and expert in fluid thermal sciences, Battaglia joined the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences faculty in 2017 after a decade at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and eight years at Iowa State University.

Her research explores issues related to the thermal sciences, such as building energy utilization, alternate energy, and turbulent multiphase and reacting flows. She has received $8 million in federal and state research funding, primarily from the Department of Energy.

Battaglia is a fellow of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and ASTFE. She is the current editor-in-chief for the ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering and is a 2019-20 fellow of the Mid-American Conference Academic Leadership Development Program. She has co-authored 130 refereed journal and conference papers and supervised more than 40 graduate students. In 2016, she received the ASME Dedicated Service Award.

She received her doctorate in mechanical engineering from Pennsylvania State University, and a master’s in aerospace engineering and bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, both from UB.
