We are a new forward-leaning, interdisciplinary department that aims to transform the training and education of materials scientists and engineers.

We are centered on establishing knowledge discovery in materials science by harnessing the tools of information and data science.

We are addressing society's need for significant acceleration of design and discovery of new materials, emergent properties and processing strategies that impact a broad range of technological applications including advanced manufacturing and biosciences/technology in a socially responsible manner.

Our Mission

The mission of the Department of Materials Design and Innovation is to provide high-quality engineering education at the bachelor's, master's and PhD levels, appropriate to the discipline and consistent with our status as a first-rate research university. In particular, the elements of our mission are to:

  • Prepare our students for careers or advanced study in Materials Science and Engineering or other relevant fields.
  • Serve relevant professional groups with excellence in scholarship, character, and integrity.
  • Impact significant technical, societal, and environmental challenges through innovative research, transformative education, and leadership opportunities.
