Technology.org reports on a research team led by Shenqiang Ren, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, that has created a new 3D-printed molecular ferroelectric metamaterial.

The metamaterial could benefit everything from acoustic blankets for aircraft soundproofing to shock absorbers and elastic cloaks that shield sensitive electronic systems from external mechanical disturbances.

Associate professors Mostafa Nouh, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Chi Zhou, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, are co-authors of the study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
