““In her few short years in the CBE department, Elina has already mentored three Ph.D. students through to graduation, published numerous research contributions in top journals, and brought in substantial research grants to support her lab. On behalf of the department, I am proud of her success and delighted to see it recognized in this way" ”

The award celebrates a recent superior achievement of a scholar in their field of study, and that such an achievement will have distinguished the recipient as an up-and-coming scholar, as well as earned them individual acclaim for their work, which could be a published work or other scholastic or artistic endeavor.

Kyriakidou’s research program focuses on catalysis of carbon-hydrogen bond activation and related emissions reduction technologies with both fundamental scientific impact and important practical implications for controlling vehicle emissions.

Her group at UB advances the use of a variety of different experimental techniques, such as temperature-programmed studies, FTIR spectroscopy, chemisorption of probe molecules, UV-vis spectroscopy, Transmission/Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Through collaborations with Oak Ridge National Laboratory Kyriakidou's group utilizes highly specialized equipment for the characterization of the nanostructure of catalytic materials.
