BUFFALO, N.Y. -- In the interest of public discussion on this topic, the University at Buffalo would like to present these facts:
- Nearly all (99.2 percent) of UB international students enroll at UB on non-resident student visas; they cannot become residents of New York State while on a student visa, and thus they pay full non-resident tuition for all years while enrolled at UB. Tuition for out-of-state and international students covers the direct cost of their education - they do not receive discounted tuition.
- The vast majority of UB’s international students are focused on completing their education while in the U.S. Upon graduation they plan to return to their home countries to begin their careers.
- About 5,000 international students are enrolled at UB and the university is very pleased they selected UB to pursue their education; they do not displace New York State residents. Nearly 24,000 U.S. students enroll at UB, the majority of who are from New York State.
- UB’s international students offer immeasurable academic and cultural value to our campuses and local communities, while making a significant economic impact to Western New York.
- UB’s campus community includes international students from 115 countries – enriching our campus life and creating opportunities for cross-cultural exchange.
- UB’s international students help make UB a great, globally minded university for all UB students by
- Bringing global perspectives to UB classrooms and research labs
- Helping increase cultural understanding between American students and those of other nationalities
- Supporting U.S. innovation through their science and engineering coursework
- Supporting programing and services on campus for all students by paying tuition at out-of-state rates
- UB’s international students had a total economic impact in WNY of $140,307,100 in 2013, supporting 1,943 jobs here, according to NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
