Industry leaders and academics joined forces to discuss digital manufacturing technologies at an afternoon seminar entitled “Digital Manufacturing & the Next Revolution,” in Agrusa Auditorium at UB’s Davis Hall.
Hosted by UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Center for Materials Informatics (CMI), together with representatives of the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII), the seminar addressed various initiatives for workforce development, Industry 4.0, digital competitiveness, and supply chain integration for small and medium manufacturers.
The DMDII is a part of President Obama’s National Network of Manufacturing Innovation, which was created to hasten the reshoring of advanced manufacturing. It is focused on promoting the deployment of digital manufacturing and design technologies (the so-called “digital thread”) to enhance efficiency and cost-competitiveness.
Following the event, UB signed on as a Tier 1 academic member of the DMDII. Member institutions are eligible to bid for DMDII projects, which aim to demonstrate and apply digital manufacturing technologies to increase the competitiveness of American manufacturing.
Held on July 16, 2015, the event featured 25 speakers from industry and UB. It was organized by Venkat Krovi, associate professor, and Gary Dargush, professor and associate dean for research and graduate education, both from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
