A story on WKBW-TV about the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Mexico earlier this week featured an interview with Amjad Aref, a professor in the department of civil, structural and environmental engineering.
Aref, whose research focus area is structural and earthquake engineering discussed the strength of the earthquake and the effects it had on buildings and structures in the affected areas.
"A 7.1 is a very strong ground shaking that will cause a lot of older buildings to collapse," Aref says, "Modern buildings might sustain some damage."
Mark Pitman, the technical services manager for the structural engineering and earthquake simulation laboratory, is also quoted in the story, regarding earthquake simulations and the types of research being conducted in the lab.
