Professor Michel Bruneau in UB’s Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities.

The award recognizes research and publications and artistic production exhibited by faculty across the SUNY system. Recipients demonstrate evidence of sound scholarship through grants, honors and awards, and other avenues.

Faculty who practice in a scientific discipline receive this honor based on the scholarship criteria. SUNY describes this as “an excellent, sustained record of research publications in peer-reviewed journals, and/or research monographs, and/or research-oriented texts.”

“Michel earns yet another award in what has been a banner year,” said Joseph Atkinson, professor and chair of CSEE, “his sustained national recognition reinforces our position as some of the best structural researchers in the country.”

Bruneau joined UB in 1998, and has worked in a number of different capacities. He is a former director of MCEER, and was a principal investigator on the grant to create the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory. Bruneau is currently an Institute of Bridge Engineering (IBE) researcher and a professor. His research includes the evaluation and retrofit of existing steel bridges and buildings subjected to large destructive forces up to collapse, as well as the development of new design concepts capable of providing satisfactory seismic resistance, blast resistance, or both simultaneously as multi-hazard resistant concepts.

In addition to his academic work, he is also an accomplished author, and recently won the Garcia Prize for Best Fiction for his latest novel, My Author is Dead.
