Scaling Advances Drive the Semiconductor Industry

Abstract

The history of the semiconductor industry has long been tied to Gordon Moore’s Law, based on his 1965 observation that advances in device-fabrication technology were enabling the number of transistors per chip to double on an annual cadence. Although the physical limits of silicon devices eventually brought that long-held assumption to an end, the industry has continued to advance scaling such that today’s largest integrated circuits contain more than 300 billion transistors, powering power-hungry rack-scale systems in gigawatt data centers. At the same time, shrinking transistors has enabled breakthroughs in ultra-low-power devices as well. In this talk, Demler will describe how scaling continues to drive the semiconductor industry, and highlight opportunities for electrical engineers to participate in this exciting industry.
