Shawn Barrett UB CBE Advisory Board

Associate Director
Bioproduction R&D Thermo Fisher Scientific

Shawn came to Life Technologies (now Thermo Fisher Scientific) with 13 years of experience in bioreactor process development and scale-up at various organizations in the biopharmaceutical and biotech industry, including Centocor R&D, Eli Lilly BioRTP, and NRC Biotechnology Research Institute. Since joining the company in 2008, he has led development of several novel reagents for use in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) bioprocesses, including CD FortiCHO, CD EfficientFeed C AGT, and FunctionMAX TiterEnhancer. In his current role Shawn leads the new product introduction (NPI) team for gibco® BioProduction R&D focusing on cell culture medium development for production of recombinant proteins and vaccines. He received his Bachelors of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1994.

My interests lie in furthering the application of engineering principles in the industrial fields of biotechnology and bioprocess engineering, and I joined the CBE board specifically to facilitate greater interaction between Life Technologies and Chemical Engineering at UB. My desire is to strengthen ties with CBE to complement an existing connection with the Department of Biotechnical and Clinical Laboratory Sciences. I look forward to continuing facility tours that were initiated last year, investigating prospects for CBE students to shadow cell culture techniques, and promoting internship opportunities as they become available.
