Department of Materials Design and Innovation

The STLE, one of the largest professional societies in the field of tribology and lubrication technology, deals with emerging issues and advanced engineering technologies to improve the performance of equipment and products and in conserving resources to create sustainable lubrication practices.

Her poster, entitled “Predicting Intrinsic Friction of 2D Materials Using Machine Learning Techniques,” was focused on developing machine learning models through the identification of key characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) materials that control friction during the onset of sliding. The work was done under the supervision of Prathima Nalam and Kristofer Reyes, both assistant professors in the Department of Materials Design and Innovation (MDI).

“Behnoosh’s work has applications in the areas of engine lubrication and advanced electronics. Her research has enabled screening and identification of the 2D material (among 15 different exfoliable layered materials) with the least friction characteristics. She is currently conducting nanoscale experiments on the identified 2D material to gain further insights into the origins of friction for these unique materials. We are very proud of her contributions in this area,” said Nalam, who is also Sattari’s advisor.

Sattari’s poster was one of 51 submitted to the event from students and early career researchers. The meeting attracted over 1,500 attendees from 35 countries, and was held May 19-23, 2019, in Nashville, Tennessee.

UB’s Department of Materials Design and Innovation is a collaboration between the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
