The Military Operations Research (MOR) Society recently gave the 2020 MOR Journal Award to Rajan Batta, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and his former student, Michael Moskal II (PhD ’16, MS ’13, BS’11), for their paper on real-time routing of UAVs to collect threat information.

As part of the work, the team developed a lab test on campus in which a UAV was deployed over a test area to collect information using an onboard camera, solving the algorithm in real-time and delivering the results to the UAV to guide its routing. The paper, Adaptive Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Surveillance Using a Prize-Collecting Vertex Routing Model,” was based on Moskal’s dissertation, which he completed in January of 2016. Batta was his advisor.

Moskal is director of operations at OSTHUS, a company that brings innovative scientific informatics applications to many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical, crop sciences and life sciences companies. He is based in Melbourne, Florida.

Batta also serves as associate dean for faculty affairs and diversity in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
