The Christmas and New Year’s Day federal holidays will be observed on Wednesday,  December 25 and Wednesday,  January 1 and the university will be closed.

The university will be open the week of the Christmas holiday, except for Wednesday, December 25, 2024, and the need for non-essential services will be low during this time. Vice Presidents and Deans have discretion to assess their operating needs and may authorize limited onsite staffing or remote work during this week.

Human Resources does not require revised telecommuting agreements for remote work during Christmas week.

Requesting Vacation During Christmas Week

Employees that want to take vacation leave during this time should follow their department’s normal procedure for requesting time off from work. If an employee does not have sufficient accruals to take vacation leave during the week of the Christmas holiday:

State Employees

If you do not have sufficient accruals and want to take additional time away from work that week, you have the following options:

  • You may request an advance of up to four vacation days OR
  • Request to take the days off without pay

Advanced vacation days can only be requested for 12/23/2024 through 12/27/2024.

If you have vacation, holiday, or personal accruals that are available for use 12/23/2024 through 12/27/2024, you may not request advanced vacation or unpaid time.

How to Request Advance Vacation or Unpaid Time Off

  1. Send a letter to your supervisor detailing your request.
  2. Your supervisor must approve your request for time off.
  3. If approved, your supervisor must prepare a letter including:
    • Employee's name
    • Person number
    • Department
    • Supervisor
    • Dates of unpaid time OR number of vacation days to be advanced (max is 4)
  4. Send the letter no later than 12/13/2024 by close of business, via email to UB-HR-timeandattendance@buffalo.edu.

If Benefits Services does not receive your supervisor's letter by close of business 12/13/2024, your request may not be honored.

Research Foundation Employees

If you do not have sufficient accruals you can choose to take the days off without pay.

If you plan to make use of the without pay option, notify your supervisor so your department can submit the appropriate transaction to Human Resources no later than close of business Friday, 12/13/2024.
