Submit Messages to the Class of 2021

The SEAS Class of 2021 has been through a lot in the past year. Video messages of encouragement, congratulations, and pride from our school community will mean a lot to them.

We plan to share your video messages widely, through our SEAS social media channels, on our website, and hopefully at our in-person commencement ceremony.

General Tips

  • Keep your message very short – 15-30 seconds tops.
  • Use a cell phone and in horizontal format. Most phones have better cameras (vs a laptop or tablet).
  • Wear solid colors. Strong patterns and stripes can be distracting.
  • Consider taking the video at your workplace, if feasible. This will help the Class of 2021 see their future selves. Whatever location you use, be sure to have a nice background. It doesn’t have to be plain, but should not be distracting either. There are some UB-branded Zoom backgrounds here
  • Start your video by introducing yourself and your major, or where you work, or your job title. Then, when you start recording, hold your shot for a few beats before you start talking.
  • Don’t read a script. These are short videos, and the more natural you speak, the better it will be.
  • Have fun!

Guide to Cell Phone Videos

  1. Find a quiet location to film with plenty of light.
  2. Open up your camera on your iPhone or Android.
  3. Use the front facing camera as if you were taking a selfie.
  4. Position the cell phone so that it is horizontal (landscape).
  5. Now that you are in the correct orientation, make sure you are holding the cell phone at eye level. Be sure you are positioned in the center of the camera’s view, both vertically and horizontally, so that viewers can see your face straight on. You can also have someone else film you if that’s easier.
  6. Record within 2-3 feet to capture good audio.
  7. Tap the recording button and begin filming! Try to hold the phone steady while you are filming so there is no shaking.
  8. Remember to smile and speak clearly
