Sissy Nikolaou (MS ’95, PhD ‘98), PE was elected governor of the ASCE G-I Board last month. The G-I is a membership organization, within ASCE, focused on geoprofessionals and the geo-industry.

Nikolaou is currently a principal in the geotechnical & tunneling technical excellence center in the New York office of WSP, an international engineering and design firm with over 37,000 employees. She is a member of the Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering Department Advisory Board, and holds leadership board roles in the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and the Applied Technology Council. Nikolaou also delivered the distinguished alumna speech to the SEAS graduate student graduating class in May 2017.

ASCE has nine different technical areas to advance the profession of civil engineering. Each group represents a specific area of civil engineering. Some examples include the  G-I group, architectural engineering group, environmental and water resources engineering group and the structural engineering group.

According to the ASCE G-I’s website, the G-I group is made up of engineers, students, academics and other professionals who investigate ways to advance the built environment with an expertise in the engineering behavior of earth materials.

In addition to role on the ASCE G-I board of governors, Nikolaou serves on several committees with ASCE, including, the earthquake engineering and soil dynamics technical committee and the infrastructure resiliency division.
