The Marsha P. Johnson State Park Gateway

Supervising Structural Engineers

WSP, Buffalo, NY

WSP worked with the NY State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation to design a decorative, artistic gate for the Martha P. Johnson State Park in Brooklyn, NY.  The structure consists of forged steel flowers and alumninum bronze "charms" that are infilled with colored translucent resin, interrupting and becoming part of the structure. WSP used the branding company's concept drawings and renderings to select the best-suited materials and engineer the structure. The main engineering interests of this project are the unusual combinations of materials in the structure, connection methods, analysis of a non-orthogonal structure, and the intricate detailing provided to the fabricator.

Both Fonzi (BSEE, 1995) and Bajorek (BS in Civil Engineering, 2004) are UB alumni and NY State licensed professional engineers currently employed by WSP.

Fonzi is a supervising structural engineer with 37 years of design and project management experience across several engineering disciplines, including marine, civil, structural, building mechanical, custom steel fabrication, telecommunications and material handling. He has supervised the construction for many of these projects. His diverse experience gives him a abroad understanding of design and construction issues and of coordination between the engineering disciplines, and he is able to successfully tackle and complete unique one-off projects that require the application of multiple knowledge areas and thinking outside the confines of typical guidelines and standards. 

Bajorek has 33 years of experience in structural engineering, His work includes the design and overall project management of a wide range of structures, including buildings, rail lines, industrial facilities and the occasional amusement ride. This experience has allowed him to work in the public, private and even public art spaces. Bajorek is responsible for the overall management of these projects externally as the client contact/Engineer of Record, and internally, including proposal efforts, staffing, contract management and quality control.
