Research interests

Our group aims to develop computational tools and holistic frameworks that provide insights into the design of sustainable products and technologies. Our methodological work focuses on four broad topics: (1) multi-scale process design, (2) technology pathway analysis, (3) sustainable supply chains, and (4) environmental and social justice. These methodologies have been used to address problems arising in resource allocation, plastic waste processing and management, and energy systems.  Within each methodological area, we are interested in answering the following questions.

(1) Multi-Scale Process Design

  • How to integrate advances across multiple scales for the design of novel materials and technologies?
  • What are the optimal conditions to scale up and deploy these systems?
  • How to assess their contribution to sustainable development?

(2) Technology Pathway Analysis

  • How to assess thousands of possible technology pathways for clean energy and end-of-life areas?
  • What are the economic and environmental trade-offs of each pathway?
  • Which technologies can enable a sustainable energy future and a transition towards circularity?
  • How to price environmental impacts?

(3) Sustainable Supply Chains

  • How to design resilient supply chains for clean energy, food, pharmaceuticals and textiles?
  • How to coordinate and remunerate stakeholders in supply chains?
  • How to maximize efficiency, resiliency, and accessibility?
  • How to minimize costs, resource consumption, and environmental footprint?

(4) Environmental and Social Justice

  • How to measure fairness in the transition to clean energy and in the life cycle of plastics?
  • How to assess socio-ecological impacts in these systems?
  • How to address injustice in multi-stakeholder, multi-objective systems?
