Prof. Gunawan develops mathematical and computational approaches to understand how complex biological systems are organized, regulated, and perturbed. His research integrates systems biology, bioinformatics, single-cell and multiomic data, mechanistic modeling, and machine learning to reconstruct biological networks and uncover the mechanisms that connect molecular regulation to cellular function. His work spans gene regulatory and metabolic networks, glycosylation, aging, and disease, with an emphasis on extracting mechanistic insight from high-dimensional biological data. A recently awarded NIH R01 will support his team’s efforts to combine single-cell multiomics with mathematical and machine-learning models to uncover the regulatory networks that govern glycosylation, a fundamental cellular process with broad implications for human health and disease.
