Former UB CBE PhD student Yumiao Zhang is the 2018 recipient of the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the University at Buffalo.  His dissertation was titled "Low-temperature block copolymer processing for biomedical applications." Currently, Dr. Zhang is a professor at Tianjin University in China. As a doctoral student in Professor Jonathan Lovell's research group, Dr. Zhang's dissertation focused on the development of a novel class of drug/dye carrier, surfactant stripped frozen micelle, to solve a wide variety of biomedical problems such as (i) intestinal imaging by photoacoustic method and (ii) safe pharmaceutical formulations with minimal toxicity. The UB Outstanding Dissertation Award is selected by a group of faculty for the best dissertation in the fields of Physical Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering written by a UB doctoral student over the past five years. Dr. Zhang's work will be recognized at the UB Celebration of Student Academic Excellence in April 2019, and UB will also nominate his dissertation for the Northeastern Association of Graduate School’s 2018-19 Doctoral Dissertation Award.
