Professor Deborah Chung

Professor Chung will share in this seminar her 47-year journey as a materials scientist. The presentation will include her education, career development, research steering and the four research areas that she has pioneered. These areas are structural self-sensing, vibration damping through interface-derived viscoelasticity, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials, and thermal interface materials.

Professor Chung received her Ph.D. degree in Materials Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and her B.S. degree from Caltech. She is ranked by the 2020 Stanford University study to be No. 14 among 177931 materials scientists in the world (living and deceased), No. 1 among those that are female, and No. 1 among those that are ethnic Chinese. She is a pioneer and international leader in the field of multifunctional structural materials. She has authored or coauthored over 600 archival peer-reviewed journal papers, and 10 books. Her Google Scholar h-index is 101, with 37,803 citations (viewed on 8/29/21). Chung is Fellow of ASM International and American Carbon Society.  She received the Pettinos Award (a triennial international research award, 1 person each time) from the American Carbon Society and an Honorary Doctorate Degree from University of Alicante, Spain.
