Mark Hare, MS Student
Structural and Earthquake Engineering

Where are you from?
Batavia, N.Y.

Why did you choose UB?
I chose it because it was the best value in the area. I didn't want to travel anywhere to go to school. In terms of what you get for the tuition you pay, I thought this was the best choice.

What do you like most about UB engineering?
The wide variety of projects that they have to work on. There's so much diversity among the faculty here. There are projects that cover almost anything you can think of and they've got some big names in the engineering world. I think as far as public universities go, it's probably one of the best research universities around.

What are you working on?
Right now I'm working with one of the structural engineering professors, Dr. Sivaselvan, on a hybrid testing project. Rather than build an entire structure just to test it on an earthquake simulator, which can be very expensive, we can build just the portion of the structure we're interested in and simulate the rest of it with a computer. So we build that small portion of the structure and hook up sensors from the computer, which then applies structure forces to the test specimen and simulates the entire structure. So it's a really neat and efficient method of testing.

What else do you do?
I'm working on my master's so I'm taking a few classes and I'll probably be working with Dr. Sivaselvan on my thesis next semester.

What are you passionate about?
I'm really passionate about engineering and also computers. One of the things I really try to set myself apart with is being fluent with computers because it's kind of uncommon for someone in civil engineering to be really into computers. I also have two cats at home so I guess you can say I'm passionate about my cats as well.

What are your future plans?
I'm going to finish my master's and after that, depending on what the opportunities are here, I might continue on and do my PhD here. If not, I'll end up working somewhere in the area.
