Many subjects addressed by mechanical and aerospace engineers are inderdisciplinary in nature. For example, MAE researchers in computational mechanics have developed a high fidelity volcanic landslide simulator to aid geologists in mapping hazard areas.

As one of the broadest of the engineering disciplines, mechanical engineers are involved in research and development, design, manufacturing, and technical sales of a variety of products.

Aerospace engineering includes the traditional aeronautics and astronautics applications (subsonic and supersonic aircraft, satellites, space shuttle, space station, etc.), as well as aerospace-related component development (design of structures, devices, and instruments) and vehicle and propulsion system design.
