Engineers are developing a battery-free pacemaker

An article in The Scientist reports on research by Amin Karami, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, to develop systems that harness kinetic energy from a patient’s heart beat to power battery-free leadless pacemakers, eliminating the need to replace pacemakers that lose battery power after seven or eight years. “Over time, literally what is happening is your heart is turning into a graveyard for old pacemakers,” he said.
