A story on WBFO-FM about efforts to encourage more African-Americans to enter the STEM fields interviews Kevin Burke, teaching assistant professor of electrical engineering.

"I remember early in my graduate career, going to conferences and me being the only black person in the room out of a room of only 1,000 or 2,000," Burke said. “It’s eye-opening for sure. It also served as motivation."

The story also interviews David Milling, senior associate dean for student and academic affairs in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, who said racism cast a shadow on his experience as a doctor, and Scott Williams, professor emeritus of mathematics, who said overall, his career was good, but there were a few times where the issue of race made its presence known.
