The Department of Materials Design and Innovation (MDI) is a
forward-leaning, interdisciplinary initiative that will address
regional and national demand for new materials that accelerate
research and education in advanced manufacturing and
The MDI evolved from the UB 2020 strategic plan to position UB as a
leading public university by investing in and focusing its research
strengths on solving important societal problems.
MDI, together with the Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics (CMI), will lead UB's response to national and state needs in materials and advanced manufacturing. MDI, in partnership with the Computer and Data Science and Engineering (CDSE) program, is advancing UB's effort related to the White House Materials Genome initiative. In addition, the department has close interactions with Buffalo Manufacturing Works, the UB Center for Computational Research (CCR), Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute and UB's Research and Education in eNergy, Environment and Water Institute (UB-RENEW).
