Materials Design and Innovation

New department is a collaboration between the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

The Materials Design and Innovation department builds on UB's considerable faculty expertise in materials science and engineering, and in computing and informatics.

The Department of Materials Design and Innovation (MDI) is a forward-leaning, interdisciplinary initiative that will address regional and national demand for new materials that accelerate research and education in advanced manufacturing and biotechnology.

The MDI evolved from the UB 2020 strategic plan to position UB as a leading public university by investing in and focusing its research strengths on solving important societal problems.

MDI, together with the Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics (CMI), will lead UB's response to national and state needs in materials and advanced manufacturing. MDI, in partnership with the Computer and Data Science and Engineering (CDSE) program, is advancing UB's effort related to the White House Materials Genome initiative. In addition, the department has close interactions with Buffalo Manufacturing Works, the UB Center for Computational Research (CCR), Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute and UB's Research and Education in eNergy, Environment and Water Institute (UB-RENEW).
