Over the past two years, five faculty members from UB’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have received awards from the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) Region 1 chapter.
The annual awards are given to IEEE members whose recent work has made significant contributions to their field. IEEE Region 1 is the home to the IEEE organizational units in the northeastern U.S., and IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization for the advancement of technology.
“We are delighted to learn that so many of our distinguished faculty have been honored by the IEEE for their remarkable accomplishments in technical innovation and outstanding teaching,” said Liesl Folks, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Murat Demirbas, director of graduate studies and a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, received a 2018 Technological Innovation Award for his significant contributions in distributed systems, including cloud/datacenter computing, wireless sensor networks, and smartphone-sourced sensing and collaboration.
Tarunraj Singh, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, received a 2018 Technological Innovation award for his pioneering contributions in the field of controller design under uncertainty and nonlinear estimation for disparate applications.
Ramalingam Sridhar, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was given a 2018 Technological Innovation award for his research accomplishments and leadership in the area of system-on-chip and power-performance tradeoffs in mobile and embedded solutions.
Shambhu Upadhyaya, associate dean for research and graduate education in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, director of the Center of Excellence in Information Systems Assurance Research and Education, and a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, earned a 2018 Technological Innovation Award for his research accomplishments and leadership in cybersecurity.
Jennifer Zirnheld, Maxwell Technologies Inc. professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, received an award in 2017 for outstanding teaching in the field of electrical engineering and support for IEEE mission. Zirnheld teaches a range of courses as well as works closely with students as the director of UB’s Energy Systems Institute.
