Abstract: The Ecosystem Restoration through Interdisciplinary Exchange (ERIE) Program has partnered with Motorola Corporation and its consultant, KPRG and Associates, to collaborate on the design of a unique plant-based installation for mitigating groundwater contamination. The installation site, a rural area near Machias, NY, has legacy groundwater impacts from trichloroethelyne (TCE), a solvent often used in industrial manufacturing.  As an alternative to conventional energy-intensive remediation approaches, land-owner Motorola has implemented phytoremediation—the use of plants to uptake, degrade, and mitigate subsurface contamination.
