A new study by Teng Wu, an assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, and his PhD student Reda Snaiki proposes an analytical framework for the rapid estimate of rain rate during tropical cyclones.
Wu and Snaiki developed this new efficient analysis framework for rain field estimation based on a field observation emphasizing the significant contribution of rain-induced momentum flux at Earth's surface. The total surface stress results mainly from momentum flux contributions of wind and rain. Wu and Snaiki used a height-resolving wind field, which they had recently developed, during the model construction of the surface rain rate.
The rain rate model can be readily implemented into state-of-the-art tropical cyclone risk assessment.
