UB’s Institute of Bridge Engineering (IBE) arranged for a hands-on tour of The New NY Bridge construction site this past spring. Led by Anthony Tessari, assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, and Jerome O’Connor, Executive Director of the IBE, the trip gave the students an opportunity to see a major design-build project in progress.

The structure, known as “The New NY Bridge,” is being designed and built by a joint venture called Tappan Zee Constructors. The bridge project will cost about $3.9 billion and take five years to build, but it is designed to give over 100 years of service.

By the end of the project, over 400 engineers will have worked on the mega-project, according to O’Connor.

In the photo above, the group is shown on a work platform that is underneath the existing 60 year old bridge that crosses 3.1 miles over the Hudson River near Tarrytown, N.Y.  The piling for the new foundation can be seen in the background.
