Beekeepers winterize University at Buffalo on-campus hives

The Buffalo News and WGRZ-TV reported on how beekeepers with the UB Bees project are helping on-campus honeybees survive the winter. Participants included two engineering students.

UB Bees director David Hoekstra, clinical assistant professor of biological sciences, talked with WGRZ about the winterization process, which includes steps such as installing mouse guards and insulation, and stashing emergency food in the hives.

In addiition to Hoekstra, participants included Alex Chimiak (environmental science), Riley Blasiak (civil and environmental engineering), and Noah Wichlacz (electrical engineering); and SUNY Buffalo State student Matthew Gibbs. UB Bees​ maintains several beehives near Crofts Hall on UB's North Campus to educate the community about honeybees and beekeeping.
