Students posters within the Department covered a variety of topics, ranging from Analysis of Low-cost Alternatives for Supplying Water and Energy in Rural Africa to Critical Chloride Ion Content Necessary to Initiate Active Corrosion in RC Structures. Two students earned awards for their research in the Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creativity categories.

Paolo Bourdeau, a junior civil engineering student, earned this distinction for his research and poster on accurately determining wind speed during hurricanes. He started working with assistant professor Teng Wu on this project during the summer of 2018, and has since continued his research.

Abdulrahman Hassaballah earned two awards at the ceremony. The environmental engineering PhD student earned his first award for research and a poster on peracetic acid (PAA). Hassaballah’s research explores new disinfection technologies for water resource recovery facilities. Hassaballah previous earned second place in the Department’s 2018 poster competition, and first place in the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’ poster competition the same year.

Hassaballah was honored a second time for winning third place in UB’s Three Minute Thesis competition.
