Michael Constantinou is a SUNY Distinguished Professor and the Samuel Capen Professor of Civil Engineering. His research interests are in structural engineering, earthquake engineering, seismic isolation, seismic-energy dissipation, large-scale testing and performance-based design. His honors include the 2015 ASCE Nathan Newmark Medal, the 2015 ASCE Moisseiff Award, the 2004 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, the 2005 Charles Pankow Award for Innovation and three professional practice awards, including the 2002 Grand Award of the American Council of Engineering Companies. He has served as a consultant on the analysis and design of over 100 structures in 19 countries, including the San Francisco International Airport, off-shore oil and gas platforms in Russia, and several seismically isolated hospitals and the new Apple Campus building in California.
