Biography

Dr. Edward P. Furlani has established a vigorous research program for the development of computational methods and models to create next-generation materials and devices with features and functionality designed at the nano to micro-scale. His current projects span applications of microfluidics, additive manufacturing, biosensing, energy storage, photonics and bio-applications of magnetic particles.  With a PhD in theoretical physics, he holds joint appointments as Professor in both UB Chemical and Biological Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Prior to transitioning to UB in 2011, he was a principal scientist in the Eastman Kodak Research Labs where he performed and directed interdisciplinary modeling for the development and design of various commercial materials and devices.

Dr. Furlani’s industrial experience spans 27 years and a broad range of applications in the fields of microfluidics, inkjet systems, optoelectronics, applied magnetics and microsystems technology. He is among Kodak’s most prolific invertors and received the Prolific Inventor Award (2008) from the Society for Imaging Science and Technology, and Kodak’s Chief Technology Officer Century Award (2001) in recognition of his innovative contributions.

Dr. Furlani serves as an advisory board member for various companies and as symposium organizer and steering committee member for international conferences. He also serves on the editorial board and as reviewer for numerous journals, and on national and international scientific review panels.  His cumulative research contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed publications, 90 publications in conference proceedings, a sole-authored textbook on applied magnetics and numerous book chapters and invited conference presentations.

Dr. Furlani also has a distinguished record of translational research and currently holds 152 U.S. patents and 40 foreign patents.
