University News

In his sixth State of the University address, Satish K. Tripathi told faculty, alumni and members of the UB community, “There is a momentum that I see here each and every day: UB is a university on the move, an institution on the rise.”

UB held a reinterment ceremony to commemorate the lives of 372 people buried between the mid-19th and early-20th centuries on the grounds of the former Erie County Poorhouse cemetery, situated along Bailey Avenue near the edge of what is today the university’s South Campus.

Research Spotlight

A new vaccine under development by UB scientists could lower the number of deaths from pneumonia by targeting dozens of additional strains of S. pneumoniae, and anticipating future versions of the bacteria responsible for the disease.

Scientists from For-Robin Inc., a UB biotechnology spinoff, have published new scientific results showing the company’s cancer-fighting antibody can target, penetrate and kill human tumor cells effectively.

UB People

A UB graduate who said the university changed his life has given $4 million to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). Stephen Still graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1976, and spent most of his career in the aviation industry.

The Department of Geology and the RENEW Institute will welcome a new hire in January: Kristin Poinar, a NASA climate scientist whose study on giant cracks in the Greenland Ice Sheet made headlines worldwide in early 2017.
