There is widespread recognition nationally that the profession of chemical engineering is undergoing an evolution that places increasing importance on biology, nanotechnology, multiscale phenomena, and design of material products as well as traditional manufacturing processes. At the same time, many core applications of the chemical engineering profession (e.g., energy) continue to grow in importance to society, and they certainly must continue to be taught well too.

Our faculty includes a member of the National Academy of Engineering, six winners of National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator, New Young Investigator, and CAREER awards; and several recipients of national, international, and regional research and teaching awards from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the Electrochemical Society, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the American Society for Engineering Education, Tau Beta Pi, and the State University of New York system, among others.
Studies conducted by the University of Pittsburgh rank UB CBE among the top 10 in the world based on research publications per faculty and their impact on the field. The 2010 National Research Council reports rank the department as 8th among 106 institutions in the United States in both awards and publications per faculty. UB CBE ranks 24th overall against all criteria.
